Lunch on the Roof

Jan is in California, John is in London, continues...

After yesterday's shock of John's newly shaved head, I have to say that it looks better in daylight webcam than evening webcam. Whew!

Wow, I can blog about London and I'm not even there '-) John emailed me photos of the roof deck at our London house because he and house-guest Derek carried our patio furniture up there yesterday. The furniture had been sitting downstairs for over a year while we tried to figure out how we were going to carry it up to the roof. Thankfully Derek is there now and could help John. Yay!

The Bald Surprise

Jan is in California, John is in London continues...

Yesterday, I got an email from John telling me that he had shaved his head. Sigh.

I knew this day was coming, we both did. He's been going bald longer than I've known him and we've adapted his haircut a few times over the years. Recently we abandoned his previous cut and any pretense that he still had hair and went for the close-cropped cut. He said he had been looking at how other balding men deal with it and thought that it was time to go for it.

We did Skype video last night, as we often do when he's away, so I got to see his handiwork. Shreeeeeek!

He's as freaked out by it as I am although probably more since it's his hair (or lack of it). He's going to wear it this way on his vacation in Stockholm and decide if he wants to keep it or grow it out to the 2mm length that I had been cutting it for the past year or so which I thought was just fine.

There he is with his new shiny head. (BTW, that is not a moustache, it's a combination of bad lighting, the webcam quality and his infrequent shaving.)

And there he his holding up "Eduard" to cheer me up and make me laugh. It works every time '-)

Coffee and SMS in the Morning

Jan is in California, John is in London, continues...

Apparently John arrived safely in London because this morning I woke up to find an SMS on my iPhone. An SMS? From his iPhone in London? Yay! He had taken his iPhone with him on the plane to watch video. We assumed the iPhone would not work in London, well, we didn't expect the phone part of it to work. I haven't talked to him yet but I suspect the phone part doesn't work but apparently the web part does. That is awesome. Of course, they're probably charging us $10 per SMS '-) We do plan to buy U.K. versions of the iPhone when they become available. They're supposed to be better than the U.S. ones. Of course they are. '-)

Part of our morning routine is that John makes the lattes. We have a new coffee maker, a Nespresso, that makes amazing espresso. When I'm slumped over my computer in the morning trying to think about what to blog about I love the sound of "you're coffee's ready!" coming from the kitchen.

But John isn't here so I have to make it myself. Damn. Yes, I am a princess, thanks for noticing.

John showed me how to use the machine before he left and it's really easy. However, the thing he didn't show me is how to turn it on. (The same thing happened with our new car.) So after pressing the "make coffee" button a couple times with no results I hunted down the power button. It made perfect espresso as it always does. Yummy!

John and I are well-matched in so many ways that it scares people. But one thing about us that people don't know is that our understanding of technology has a lot of overlap but there are a few things each of us doesn't get. For example, I am baffled by things like coffee machines, ovens, and Unix. John is baffled by things like flat screen tv's and MySpace. So between the two of us, we are able to figure out most stuff, usually without the manual.

One month from today I fly to London. In the meantime, I will be making my own coffee. But it's not as good as when John is here. '-)

The Long Vacation

We're in California for the summer continues...

Last night we went to a party at Cory Linden's house. It was a great evening with yummy food and interesting, fun people.

Johncar072807Today John is flying to London! He's going to be there a couple days and then he's going to Stockholm for a month. He and our friend Ramsay rented a house as a way to get to know the city and relax and work on their individual projects. Why Stockholm? John wanted to get to know an unfamiliar gorgeous European city and everyone raves about Stockholm so he decided to give it a try.

I'm going to miss John terribly, but we'll be Skyping, iChatting and emailing, as always. I'll be hanging out in California for three more weeks, then I'm going to the Second Life conference in Chicago and then to Stockholm to hang out with John before we both go to London.

Update: When John is away my favorite thing besides Skyping is when he emails me photos. Now with his new iPhone it's easier than ever so he sent me some from the airport.

Hmmm, no one at the check-in counter. Very odd.

And we almost always take photos of each other while waiting in the SFO Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse so John sent me a couple photos of himself there. Wow, he's having a mojito! Sigh.

The D-List Visits Covent Garden

We're in California for the summer continues...

Kathycab072507A couple days ago my friend Teresa and I were watching the episode of Kathy Griffin's hilarious My Life on the D-List where Kathy goes to London.

There is a scene where Kathy pretends to fall out of a cab onto the street so that she'll be photographed by the paparazzi (it worked) and I realized, hey, that's our street!

Indeed, there is Kathy falling out of her cab and in the background is our house and also the Covent Garden Tube Station, the one used in an episode of Lost in May.

Dayum! I can't believe Kathy was right down the street from me and I didn't know it! In the show, Kathy was annoyed that a woman walking by tried to help her and nearly ruined the photos with the paparazzi. Well it's a good thing that wasn't me walking down the street because I would have dragged her across the street to my house for cake soup and photos for the blog and she never would have had her paparazzi photos or her hot date in Covent Garden.

I adore Kathy; she totally cracks me up. Season 3 is her best one yet.

Dinner with the Stones

We're in California for the summer continues...

Stones072607Last night we had dinner with Cindy and Victor Stone at Vanessa's Bistro.

Vanessa's is an amazing restaurant, the food is just incredible. Everyone is so busy I'm really glad we had a chance to get together before John leaves for Stockholm on Saturday.

Cindy and Victor agreed (reluctantly, I think) to a photo on the blog. I love having photos of my friends on the blog so I can look back at all the great times we have. I always ask and so far only one person has declined. And there are some friends who are famous that I have not asked for a photo for the blog because I don't want to cross that line. Of course, some famous friends actually enjoy being on the blog which is fab.

Although one famous person I met agreed to a photo but was clearly not happy about it. Too bad. Smile! Click.

Dinner Be Gone

We're in California for the summer continues...

Zax2072507Last night we went to dinner at Zax, our favorite restaurant in Berkeley. We go there often, sometimes two or three times a week. It is the restaurant we go to within hours of getting off the plane from London. The food is amazing, the decor is lovely and the staff are fabulous. Over the years we've gotten to know the owners, who are delightful, and they always welcome us with smiles and fun conversation.

But not anymore.

They sold the restaurant and will be leaving within the month. We are devastated. But wait, we are moving. What amazing timing. Honestly, Zax is one of the reasons we've stayed in Berkeley as long as we have. We're going to miss them a lot.

Having local fabulous restaurants is one of the reasons we moved here in the first place. But as I've mentioned in the blog several times, Berkeley is going to hell in a handbasket. So many stores and restaurants have left, Zax is leaving, we are leaving.

A Little Mooching Before Dinner

We're in California for the summer continues...

Yesterday I spent a couple hours typing in 90 books to my account at BookMooch. I had been holding on to my Joyce Carol Oates books for some sentimental reason but realized that I'm not going to read them again and I definitely don't want to move them to the new house and find space for them.

Within minutes I got 5 mooch requests and by the end of the day it had increased to 10. So today I'll be rid of 10 books and I'm sure more mooches will come in. Yay!

Last night we had dinner with our friends and Magnatune artists Tanya Tomkins and Eric Zivian. We ate at Oliveto which is really exquisite. Sometimes it's hard to find time in all our schedules because they are busy, we are busy, etc. so it's always enjoyable when we have a chance to get together.

Dinner Sans Artemis

We're in California for the summer continues...

Cliffdinner3Last night we had dinner at Cliff Tune's house. Cliff is the drummer for Artemis. Our friend Cary went with us. Artemis herself couldn't make it (bitch '-), neither could Daniel, but Keith was there.

Cliff cooked the meal and it was fabulous. And we ate outdoors in perfect weather so that was also a nice treat. We also got to meet his girlfriend Susie for the first time and she is fantastic.

Another fun evening with great friends and great food!

Dinner in Larkspur

We're in California for the summer continues...

Yesterday, we drove from our mini-vacation at Avalon to our new house for several hours of inspections. Whew! More inspections this week and then we hope to close soon. I will wait to take photos of the interior of the house after it is empty because I don't think it's appropriate to show the house with the current owner's stuff in it.

I am including some photos of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge as seen from the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge going between Marin and Berkeley. Great views.

Then last night we drove back over to Marin to have dinner with our friends Leyla and Stephen Hill at the Lark Creek Inn in Larkspur. It is an exquisite restaurant and we had a great time. It's going to be so much fun and a new adventure discovering Marin and all the restaurants, etc.

To The Sea

We're in California for the summer continues...

Yesterday, we took Artemis' advice and drove on Coleman Valley Road from Occidental to the sea.

As you can see from the photos it is spectacular. I had thought it would be nice to stop the car and walk on the beach but it was so windy and cold we decided to keep driving. As we were driving on the narrow, winding road through the hills, a cow/bull/steer (I'm not sure which) walked across the road as we were approaching. I took a photo of him in the grass as we passed by and you can see some more of them grazing at the top of the hill.

Then we went to Sebatopol just to walk around a bit to see what it's like. There are some nice little shops and the bookstore is great. It's been ages since I walked around a bookstore since all the decent ones in Berkeley have closed.

Back to Avalon for an afternoon of reading and relaxing before we returned to Sebastopol for a yummy dinner.

This morning our mini-vacation ends and we are driving down to our new house for the inspections which is very exciting.

What a lovely time we had this week. So beautiful. And John actually relaxed. Seriously, he did. Fabulous.

Driving in Sonoma County

We're in California for the summer continues...

Yesterday was our first full day on our mini-vacation in Sonoma County, California.

It's all about the scenery, the vistas are really gorgeous. First we drove to Healdsburg. It was a little touristy, so we drove back to Graton for a yummy lunch. Then back to Avalon to relax with our books.

In the evening we drove over to Santa Rosa to have dinner with our old friend Stu and his fabulous wife Beth. Their daughter is also a delight and we had a wonderful evening with great food and excellent company.

Today we are going to explore some more and take photos of all the fabulous scenery. We're having dinner in Sebastopol so I'm looking forward to seeing it last after hearing so many nice things about it.

Avalon

We're in California for the summer continues...

Avalon3071807We're on vacation for a few days in Sonoma county, California. We're staying at a "luxury" bed and breakfast called Avalon. It's lovely. The room is charming and looks like something out of a storybook. It also has my three criteria for a hotel room: a sofa, a bathtub and an internet connection (and this one is great).

The drive from San Francisco yesterday was gorgeous. Route 101 was bumper-to-bumper in Marin so John switched on the GPS and we took Route 1 instead. Wow. Amazing scenery. It was a much more pleasant drive.

We arrived in the early evening so we unpacked, relaxed with our books for a couple hours and then drove over to Underwood in Graton for an exquisite dinner.

It rained heavily over night so we were worried about what today would be like. But the sky is clearing now so we're optimistic. We're planning to head over to Sebastopol for lunch and a little shopping.

This vacation is about doing nothing which I am very good at but John is not, so this really is a much-needed break for him from his ongoing projects and business meetings. And for me, after the stress of the last few days it is really wonderful to get away and relax in lovely countryside.

Goin' Up The Country

We're in California for the summer continues...

Today we're going away for a few days. When John went to Foo Camp last month he stayed at a fabulous bed and breakfast so we decided a few days there would be nice.

Originally we had thought it would be a fun few days to relax but also to explore the area with the idea of possibly moving there. But since we've already bought a new house we're still going just to relax and enjoy the countryside.

But first lunch in San Francisco and then John has a business meeting while I hang out and... er... shop, I guess. Then we're off to Sonoma for our mini-vacation.

Here are a couple photos of Clyde. In the morning he always goes to the front window to observe any activity in front of the house: birds, other cats, people walking their dogs, etc. Even when I haven't raised the shade yet, that doesn't stop him. There he is behind the shade doing his morning neighborhood watch. What a cutie, I'm going to miss him so much. Sigh.

Scoped Out

We're in California for the summer continues...

Today was the other day I've been dreading for years: my colonoscopy.

I got through drinking the dreaded yucky preparation yesterday. It was not as awful as I had been anticipating but it did get harder to drink as the day went on, mostly because the sheer volume of liquid is daunting. And I did spend the entire afternoon pooping or, more accurately, expelling forcefully. LOL.

John drove me to the clinic in downtown Oakland this morning for the colonoscopy procedure. I had been so worried about drinking the yucky stuff that I really hadn't thought about the procedure itself. But I did last night and got pretty nervous about it. Especially after reading about possible complications. But I really liked the doctor and trusted he was going to be extra careful in there.

When they brought me to the hospital bed I did finally freak out a little bit but then got myself under control. Considering that some friends of mine do indeed have colon cancer and others who didn't get it because of early detection, I was determined to get this done.

Everyone was very very friendly which really helped a lot. The anesthesiologist was particularly nice and fun, as were the nurses and technicians. The doctor came in to say hi before he started and was friendly and supportive and I again felt really comfortable with him.

Then they started the medication and I began to drift off. I drifted off pretty far but not like you do for surgery and I started to wake up toward the end and actually got to see some of the images of my colon on the video screen. I thought that was really fascinating. Except for the possible discomfort, I would have liked to have been awake for the whole thing so I could watch. He did give me many photos, yay. I don't think they are appropriate for the blog but if you're interested in them then go right ahead and take a look.

The results are that I'm very healthy. They didn't find any cancer or even polyps. They did find some diverticulosis which is common in adults over 50 which I can control with a high-fiber diet which includes many of the things I already eat and love.

Thank you to my friends who encouraged me. Wow, I can't believe I made it through this!

The Beverage from Hell

We're in California for the summer continues...

Yuckystuff071507Today is the day I've been dreading for years:

I have to drink that yucky preparation stuff for my colonoscopy tomorrow.

I know, I know, this is TMI (too much information) but I don't care. I really feel like I need to share my misery, especially since John went out on an excursion today so I'm home alone.

I got lots of stuff for "a chaser" as the doctor recommended. We'll see how it goes. I may be hitting the champagne sooner than I thought.

Update: I drank my first glass at noon. Only 15 more glasses to go. It was not as bad as I was expecting. I put the orange flavoring in. Several people said the secret is to chug the glass as fast as possible and then immediately drink something pleasant. Well it worked. Let the pooping begin.

Update: OK, here's the hardest part. I'm full. I have had six glasses of this stuff, plus a few spashes of lemonade or cream soda to soften the taste and I don't want to drink any more. I'm stuffed. But strangely, I'm also hungry. Very hungry. I want real food. I'm tired of drinking stuff. Yikes, what a day. Oh, and yes, the pooping has begun.

Update 5 hours later: Goal accomplished. Whew. Yuck.

Dinner with Artemis

We're in California for the summer continues...

It was a really interesting and completely hilarious evening. They are incredibly nice people and fun to hang out with. We really need to get together more often.

We're all hooked up on Twitter, iChat and Skype so keeping in touch is easy. I think I may have accidentally gotten Artemis hooked on Second Life, yay!

Gurl Time at the Clift

We're in California for the summer continues...

Last night I took BART into San Franicsco to have dinner with my friend Sarah.

Whenever I go into San Francisco (or anywhere) I always look up the address on Google Maps so I know where to go. I also often look at the satellite photos to get an idea of what it looks like. But now they have "street view" which actually shows you what it looks like from the pedestrian point of view. So yesterday I knew what my destination looked like, instead of walking too far down the street, trying to read the numbers on the buildings, etc.. We are living in the future. Amazing.

I'm always looking for a new, posh restaurant for us to try and discovered that there is an Asia de Cuba in San Francisco. John and I loved the one in Los Angeles and ate there every night when we stayed at The Mondrian Hotel a few months ago.

The San Francisco Asia de Cuba is in the Clift Hotel which looks gorgeous from the lobby, although I found the design to be a little dark. Dark as in not enough light. The restaurant is also gorgeous and the food once again was incredible.

The waiters start every sentence with "the portions are very large" which, frankly, we found annoying. Why do the portions need to be so large? Why can't they have normal portions? I ended up getting two starters which were fabulous but were almost too much food. Sarah got the lobster in curry sauce and said it was amazing. We got a little freaked out at the presentation when they put a little bucket (with a handle) with the lobster in it.

The service was super excellent and even though there was a lot of food we decided to be very bad and have dessert. Again. Well, the waiter described the desserts as enormous, huge, large and very big, so we had trouble deciding. We ended up getting a concoction called "The Bay of Pigs" and this mountain of stuff arrived that was truly terrifying. It had carmelized bananas, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, brownies and so much other stuff that I can't even remember. It was the size of a basketball. I'm serious. The woman at the next table took at photo of us which didn't turn out very well but you can get the idea. What you can't see in the photograph is that on the other side of the carbs sticking up out of the top is another mound of stuff, making one gigantic mound of stuff. We barely put a dent in it before I felt way too full and had to stop. I should have had the sorbet. Lesson learned.

It's always so fun to spend time with Sarah and I'm really excited that we will be moving only 15 minutes away from her so we'll be able to get together more often. Like, at my pool. Yay!

What Big Eyes You Have

We're in California for the summer continues...

Dilated071107This morning I went for my routine eye doctor appointment and she dilated my eyes. Everything checked out fine, I have a new prescription for glasses since my left eye changed a little bit. John drove me home because the dilation makes seeing in the sunlight very difficult, even with sunglasses on. It's supposed to last 5 hours. Yikes. You can see how large my pupil is in the photo. I could barely hold my eye open long enough to snap the photo with my webcam.

This afternoon I had my dreaded appointment for a colonoscopy evaluation. My colonoscopy is scheduled for Monday. Oh. My. God.

The doctor was really nice and answered my two questions to my satisfaction:

Yes, I can mix the yucky stuff with champagne or anything else I want. He said that in his personal experience a quick chaser of something yummy right after the yucky stuff was the most effective.

No, he can't provide a DVD but he does provide photos and if I want more than usual then he is happy to oblige.

I'm glad I scheduled it so soon so now I only have to worry about it for 4 days instead of weeks/months. But I'm a nervous wreck, particularly about drinking that stuff. The big question is, should the photos go on the blog? Hmmm...

Hunting for Houses

We're in California for the summer continues...

We looked at the house again today as well as another one in the next town over. So far, the house is still winning. BTW, the photos are the deer on the road on the way to the house. Adorable.

Deer071007Deer2071007vView071007View2071007

After looking at the houses John had a meeting in San Francisco and then Palo Alto so he dropped me off in downtown San Francisco. We drove over the Golden Gate Bridge which is probably only the second time I've driven over it in all the years I've lived here. It's really spectactular.

Goldengate2071007Goldengate4071007Goldengate1071007

It's always fun to go into San Francisco, I rarely go there. I walked around Bloomingdales for a while just looking at stuff because I really hate to shop. Then I had Starbuck's for lunch and took the Bart home. I took a few photos, including Bloomingdales, the Apple Store and a wacky office building near the Embarcadero.

The House from Orbit

We're in California for the summer continues...

Yesterday, John and our friend Cary went on an excursion to investigate the area around the new house we're considering, as well as the other towns in the area that are possibilities. We're seeing the house again tomorrow, so we'll be able to resolve a few questions and concerns.

Everyone keeps asking me "What about Clyde?" He isn't even my cat but my heart breaks thinking about not seeing him ever again. I don't think my Second Life cat is going to be able to take his place. Sigh.

A Second Life Dinner

We're in California for the summer continues...

Last night we had dinner with Cory Ondrejka. I was excited to meet him because he is "Cory Linden", CTO of Second Life, one of my favorite things ever.

Rather than a noisy restaurant, we went to his house so I got to meet his fabulous wife and daughter. And I'm not exaggerating when I use the word fabulous here. Cory cooked an amazing dinner, we brought champagne (ta da) and it was an excellent evening of interesting discussion and laughter; our favorite kind of evening.

We're hoping to be able to get together at least one more time before John leaves to spend the month of August in Stockholm.

Although we talked about many things, it was hard not to talk about Second Life and we did a lot of that. Cory and I talked about the new voice feature in Second Life. Instead of typing text into chat to communicate you just talk and can hear each other. I was curious so I downloaded the new Second Life viewer. I thought it would be great to chat with Kirsty and it turns out she had downloaded it yesterday too. So this morning we switched it on and there we are in Second Life actually chatting in Real Life. We could hear each other perfectly! It's so much better than typing. I have mixed feelings about using the voice feature with strangers but for people I know it's going to take our Second Life adventures to a new level. It's really amazing.

Also below are a couple comics that Kirsty made from the video she recently filmed in Second Life, combined with video elements from Real Life, for her new record that is coming out soon. Hilarious!

Dinner in Oakland

We're in California continues...

Johnpool070607After looking at the potential new house yesterday (it was fabulous, more later), we went over to Leyla and Stephen's for more pool time. Love it.

Then we headed back to the East Bay to have dinner at Baywolf with Stephen Schultz and his wife Tina Blaine. Baywolf is one of our favorite restaurants and dinner was excellent. Pink champagne? Yes.

We first met Stephen when he played at our first house concert in London. We had not met his wife Tina before and she is as fabulous as he is.

Stephen is putting the finishing touches on his recording with Elizabeth Blumenstock for Magnatune. The recording was produced and engineered by John. We're very excited to have two such extraordinary musicians on Magnatune so stay tuned.

Residential Upgrade

We're in California for the summer continues...

After upgrading our computers, then upgrading our our car we've decided it's time to upgrade our house.

On Wednesday, Leyla and Stephen told us there were some houses for sale in their neighborhood. It was a lightbulb moment for both me and John. All that space, a pool, nature; yes, it's time to move.

So today we are going to look at a few houses, including the one in the photographs below. It's actually a really difficult decision to make because we've put so much into our current house, especially the garden.

Even if none of the houses we see today turn out to be "the one" we've decided we'll keep looking. I really, really, REALLY want a pool so that's that. Time for an upgrade.

Birthday Boy and a Pool Party

We're in California for the summer continues...

Today is John's birthday, yay! I gave him the new Artemis Fowl book and he was surprised and pleased.

Yesterday we went to an all-day party at the home of our friends Leyla and Stephen Hill. They are two of the most interesting and fun people we know and we love having an opportunity to hang out with them. Their Hearts of Space is amazing and we've been fans for many years.

We met some really fabulous people at the party, including ambient music legend Robert Rich, who was delightful.

I've been looking forward to visiting Leyla and Stephen in the summertime to give their pool a try. There we are in the pool; I love the water!

Everyone brought food so there was a huge and I mean HUGE selection of amazing things. Stephen also grilled some lamb and pork that was melt-in-your-mouth fabulous.

It was an incredibly fun party, with great people and fab food. Thank you, Leyla and Stephen!

Yummy. We went out to lunch for burgers at Oscar's. It's a dive but we love their burgers.

Technology Kludge

We're in California for the summer continues...

I've been in technology hell for a couple days, trying to figure out how to list our music collection on my web site which I have always done but was way behind and it needed updating. I used to type the names of the cd's I bought into a database which I exported to a text file with all the html already in place and then integrated into a web page. Easy. But since I stopped buying cd's and buy mostly downloads now, I got lazy and stopped typing all the stuff into the database.

All of our music is in iTunes on our music server so I thought that would be the best list to use. Wrong.

As usual, Apple has made something wonderful (iTunes) that is missing many important features that a lot of people want. There is no way to export the list of music in an iTunes library that is attractive, complete or even controllable. I created a convoluted system of printing it to a pdf, converting to html, removing or modifying the bits I don't want with a regular expression and then putting it in a web page. Whew! What a mess.

I thought there must be some program out there that someone has written to do what I want. Wrong.

There are several programs but they are not customizable and just push out the info into an html file that is not customizable, is pretty ugly and does not do what I want. Actually the results of my system look pretty good (well, not exactly good but just ok) even if the html itself is a nightmare and I never would have written code like that. The only real glitch is that the "composer" field does not export for the classical library. Sigh.

I'll keep looking for some software that does what I need but I'm not optimistic.

Today I decided to pursue some technology that I know works: I'm adding some of my zillions of photos to Flickr. Flickr is fabulous. It was really fun going through my photos of the last couple years. Unfortunately the most interesting ones are of our trips in Europe and are on my computer in London so I'll have to wait until September to upload those. In the meantime, I'm uploading a bunch of photos from our trip to Los Angeles a few months ago. The photos of the bathroom at The Ivy really crack me up.

Below are a few photos from the zillions on my computer. Wow, a photo of me actually shopping. I hate shopping which is why we probably took a photo to document such a rare event.

More Books Be Gone

We're in California for the summer continues...

When we came back from London this time we discovered that the Barnes & Noble bookstore in downtown Berkeley is gone.

When Barnes & Noble moved in everyone screamed, "Oh no! It will destroy our precious independent bookstores!" Well, it didn't.

Cody's closed last year but I don't believe it was because of Barnes & Noble. Not the one in Berkeley, anyway. Especially since now it's gone too.

A real mystery is the how Pegasus Books, the "precious independent bookstore" across the street from Barnes & Noble, has stayed open. It is one of the most useless bookstores we've ever been in; we've never found anything there we wanted to buy. If a pathetic bookstore like Pegasus is still in business, even while being across the street from Barnes & Noble, which is now closed, then why couldn't a fabulous bookstore like Cody's survive? It's a mystery.

As happy as I am to see an evil monster like Barnes and Noble close, when a major chain store leaves your city it can mean only one thing: your city sucks. In the last couple of years downtown Berkeley has lost many stores, most of which are still sitting empty. I'm not
